Terms of use
These terms govern the use of Urban Secrets, the urbex map app for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch, and of this website. By creating an account or using the app, you accept them.
This is a translation for convenience; the French version prevails.
1. Who can use Urban Secrets
- You must be 18 or older.
- You sign in with Apple or with a passkey. To keep the community safe, every new account is reviewed by our team before it can access the map.
- Your account is personal: you are responsible for what is done with it. One person has one account.
2. What you publish
The places, reports, ratings, comments, photos and videos you publish, as well as your profile photo, display name and card tagline, remain yours. You grant us a free, non-exclusive, worldwide licence to host, display and adapt them (for example by blurring or resizing a photo) in the app, solely to run the service:
- your places, with the visibility you chose: the community, your friends or only you;
- your reports, visible to the whole community once published, with your profile or without your name, as you choose for each report. A report published without your name stays linked to your account for the team.
You confirm that you have the right to publish this content, in particular photos you did not take yourself.
You can delete one of your reports, photos or places at any time: it disappears at once for everyone, you included. We keep it hidden for one year, so that it can be restored (a deletion by mistake, your request, the review of an abuse), then it is erased for good. A place other members published a report on is theirs too: deleting it only withdraws you from it (it stays visible, shared by a member, no longer linked to you), and its visibility can no longer be narrowed. The licence above continues, with no link to you, for your published reports and their photos that stay, anonymized, after you delete your account (section 8).
3. Prohibited content and behaviour
No offensive, hateful, harassing, violent, sexual or illegal content is tolerated, nor is abusive behaviour towards other members. In particular, the following are prohibited:
- insults, threats, discriminatory remarks and harassment;
- explicit sexual or pornographic content: it is refused automatically when sent and is not published, and removed automatically if it was published before the automatic check was introduced;
- violent content, or content glorifying illegal acts;
- other people’s personal information, and photos in which people can be recognised without their consent;
- encouraging damage, theft or breaking in;
- describing a way in or a security weakness, in text or in a photo: entry points, gaps in a fence, forced openings, weaknesses of an alarm or a camera. Access to a place is only described with the answers the report form offers;
- fake reports, reports on a place you haven’t seen, and using several accounts or related accounts to earn rewards;
- advertising, spam, fake accounts and impersonation.
4. Report checks, reliability and rewards
- Every report is checked automatically, in particular against your exploration’s summary and your history (see the privacy policy). A report that looks inconsistent is held: it is neither published nor rewarded until a reliable member or our team confirms it, and the team may reject it.
- Your reliability, whose score only the team sees (the app only shows a badge from it, “Reliable Reporter” or “Trusted Reporter”), goes down when other visitors contradict your reports and with every moderation action on your content (warning, rejected report, content removed or edited), when the team dismisses one of your reports of content as plainly abusive, and when a confirmation of your reports is cancelled because the team removed the report it came from. It counts towards your tiers, the weight of your reports and whether your report of a photo or a video hides it until the team decides (section 5).
- Rewards (XP, tiers, trophies) have no monetary value. Content removed by the team loses the rewards it earned you: the matching XP is taken back.
- You are told when the team rejects one of your reports, removes part of one, removes one of your reports, photos or places, penalizes your content after a report or dismisses one of your reports as abusive, with the reason when it gave one (see the privacy policy). To contest one, write to us at [email protected]: a person reviews it.
5. Reporting, blocking and moderation
- Report a place from its page (“More” › “Report Place”), a report from its menu (“…” › “Report this Report”), a photo or a video from its menu in full screen (“…” › “Report Photo” or “Report Video”) and a member from their profile.
- Block a member from the same menus: their places and reports disappear for you.
- Everything you publish (texts, photos, videos) is checked automatically before other members are shown it, and what was published before this check was introduced is checked afterwards (see the privacy policy). Explicit sexual content is refused; other content it flags, or content that couldn’t be checked, stays visible to you only until the team reviews it or it passes the check. If you think a refusal is a mistake, write to us at [email protected]: a person reviews it.
- Reports of content are reviewed within 24 hours. Content that breaks these terms is removed, in whole or in part, and its author may be banned, without notice.
- A reported photo or video is hidden from other members until the team decides, if the member reporting it is reliable enough and hasn’t already had several hidden that day; otherwise the report still reaches the team. Each member can send a limited number of reports a day; beyond that, write to us at [email protected], especially about illegal content.
- You can also write to us at [email protected].
6. Respecting the law and the places
Urban Secrets lists places; the app grants no right to enter them. It is your sole responsibility to make sure you may access a place: respect other people’s property, access restrictions and the law. Break nothing, take nothing, leave nothing.
When you add a place, you make sure that sharing it puts no one in danger and does not infringe its owner’s rights.
7. Safety and explore mode
Urban exploration carries real risks: fragile buildings, unstable floors, asbestos, falls. You do it at your own risk. Conditions reported by the community may be wrong or out of date.
Explore mode (return time, alert to your safety contact, emergency screen) is an aid, not an emergency service. It depends on your device’s network, location and battery, and does not guarantee that an alert is sent or received. In an emergency, call 112 directly. Only choose as your safety contact someone who has agreed to it.
8. Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the app (Profile › Settings › Account › “Delete My Account”). Your account, profile, private and friends-only places, unpublished reports and what you had already deleted are then erased. Your published reports and their photos stay visible to the community, anonymized: they show as published by a “Deleted member”, with no link to you. The places you shared with the community stay visible, no longer linked to you, as do friends-only places other members published a report on, for those members. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms; content removed by moderation or following a legal request is erased for good.
9. Premium and purchases
- Premium (as a monthly or yearly subscription, or for life with the Founder offer when it is available) and scrap are bought in the app, on the App Store. Payment, billing and refunds are handled by Apple, under its terms.
- A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before, in your Apple Account settings (or from the app: Profile › Settings › Account › “Manage Subscription”). Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period already paid for.
- When Premium ends, its features end with it. An alert chain set up when an exploration started stays until that exploration ends, and what you already planned (an expedition, its stops, its deadline) is kept.
- Scrap is only for shop items. It has no monetary value: it can’t be refunded in money, traded or moved to another account. If Apple refunds a scrap purchase that was already spent, it is taken back: your balance may go negative, and the shop opens again once it covers a price; the items bought stay. Scrap and the items bought are deleted with your account.
10. The service
Urban Secrets is provided as is. We do our best to keep it running, but it may be interrupted, changed or discontinued. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for damage arising from the use of the app, from content published by members or from your explorations.
The app is distributed through the App Store: Apple’s standard licence agreement (EULA) applies in addition to these terms. Apple is not responsible for the service or its content.
11. Changes
We may update these terms. The date of the last update is shown at the top of this page; we will tell you by email about any significant change.
12. Governing law and contact
These terms are governed by French law. Urban Secrets is published by Rémi Bernard. For any question: [email protected], or see the help page.
